FELA Evaluation of Undrained Stability of Active Dual trapdoors in non-homogenous Soil
In the present study, the finite element limit analysis is used to investigate the undrained stability of dual trapdoors in non-homogenous soil. The dual trapdoors system is modeled in plane strain condition, and owing to the symmetry of the dual trapdoor, only half of the model is simulated. The numerical analysis is performed and the stability number of the dual trapdoors is evaluated using FELA-based OptumG2 program. Non-homogeneity of soil is taken into consideration by adopting the Tresca material model and assigning a linear increase in the strength gradient. The parametric study is performed considering different parameters affecting the stability number and failure mechanisms for dual trapdoors. The parameters considered are the clear spacing between the trapdoors, dimensionless strength gradient, and cover depth ratio representing the depth of soil deposit over the trapdoor. Lower bound and upper bound solutions are used to precisely bracket the stability number. The FELA results are compared with the solution of the others available in the literature and present study results are presented as design charts and tables for practical use in design.
