Automation of Land Expansion: Prefabrication of Floating Platforms for Expansion of Cities onto Adjacent Water Bodies
This chapter explores an alternative to conventional land reclamation through the modular prefabrication of very large floating structures (‘VLFS’). VLFS applications comprise floating modules that have been manufactured through the automation of offsite construction manufacturing. Such VLFS projects offer significant advantages over conventional land reclamation through shorter project delivery timelines, flexibility in how floating modules can be constructed across any number of manufacturing sites. The chapter begins by featuring the three categories of VLFS applications: floating infrastructure; leisure and commercial sites; and as extensions of cities, providing examples of projects that have been built or conceived. Module components of VLFS are also discussed, including the ideal form of these modules and the connectors between the modules. Three detailed case studies of built VLFS applications are presented, drawn from Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Finally, a conclusion as to how automation can further enhance the ease of connecting modules and installing VLFS on the sea is presented.
