“Reinforced Arch Method” as Retrofitting Technique for Masonry Arches. Experimental Tests and Numerical Modelling
Abstract The paper describes a technique for the consolidation of masonry arches, through the placement of post-tensioned steel cables, either at the extrados of the arch or at the intrados. Small scale experimental tests were conducted to measure the improvement obtained with the adoption of the “Reinforced Arch Method” (RAM). An experimental campaign was conducted, testing 117 arches, in order to evaluate the effect of the RAM Method in case of horizontal loads, simulating seismic actions along the principal axis of the arch. A proposal for the strengthening of multiple interconnected arches is presented, referring to “Arsenale Repubblicano” of Pisa.
