Creating Constellation Patterns II: Enumeration
Constellation patterns are a family of Islamic geometric patterns that combine different stars in a tightly interconnected matrix with few subsidiary motifs. Traditional examples include combinations of stars that are incompatible with each other and/or with the geometry of the lattice structures that underlie all periodic patterns. In part i we introduced a systematic method based on circle packing to generate examples, recovering historic patterns and creating many new ones. The method was illustrated using simple arrangements of circles on a triangular template. This paper continues the investigation and enumerates more complex configurations of circles constructed along the boundary of a triangular template. Developing the candidates into repeat units that tile the plane produces 30 new periodic constellation patterns, including some with symmetry types rarely found in traditional star patterns.
