Placemaking Since the Ancient Times: Intangible Cultural Heritage and Communities in Kathmandu Valley
Amidst temples, stupas, and monuments within UNESCO World Heritage Monument zones in Kathmandu Valley, numerous simple structures fulfill the spiritual and everyday needs of the people. The ordinary structures like Falcha (public rest houses), Hiti (water spouts), Dabu (raised platforms), and streets, squares, and open spaces are an integral part of the people’s social and cultural life. The rapid urbanization and modernization of the ancient is posing a threat to those places of people for performance. Some of the places have been even wiped out and many are at risk. The intangible Cultural Heritage of Newar’s Kathmandu Valley makes the place vibrant, interactive, and interesting. With the examples and discussion from the research work of several years, this paper will reflect on ordinary urban space and Intangible Cultural Heritage. It will also try to further explore opportunities ICH can bring to make the cities interesting and livable.
