Sustainable and Resilient Urban Development Using Environmental Planning Tools
Sustainable urban development indicates an approach in which sustainability is bolstered alongside progress, development, and urban transformation. The urban and emerging sub-urban areas have been witnessing the establishment of human settlements on the fringes where the adaptive capacity is minuscule, and statutory and insurance protections are fragmented, thus hampering the competence of the population to generate capital assets. Sustainability with regard to urban development is, hence, essential for the viability of urban and semi-urban cities. Environmental planning is a burgeoning field, in which the extenuation of the deleterious effects of urban developmental projects on human settlements, natural resources, and biodiversity niches such as wildlife sanctuaries, biodiversity hotspots, national parks, community reserves, and conservation reserves is envisaged. Urban resilience or sustainability in urban development can be attained using environmental planning, which is the cooperative tendency of scaling, modulating, and moderating the unbridled use of biodiversity with the involvement of all the stakeholders as government, sharecroppers, farmers, communities, tribal cohorts, landholders, and the indigenous people. This planning can be sought with the help of certain tools known as ‘Environmental Planning Tools’. Environmental planning tools can go a long way in fostering a continuum of project planning and evaluation prior to its implementation, owing to which the inimical threats of these urbanized and commercial developmental projects on biodiversity can be diluted if not abated. The present communication is an endeavour to explore the various types of environmental planning tools and their role in ensuring sustainable urban designing and development.
