Vibration-Based Damage Detection on Plate Structure Using Wavelet Transform Method
Vibration-Based Damage Detection (VBDD) is based on the fact that the damage causes change in global structural stiffness, which affects dynamic response of the structure. So structural damage can be detected by tracking dynamic properties such as mode shapes, natural frequencies etc. To overcome the difficulties of detecting damage with negligible frequency change, the present work explores the damage detection on plate structure from its mode shape using wavelet transform method. The wavelet transform technique for detecting damage location on plate structure is presented in this paper. Wavelet transform is a digital signal processing technique that can analyse signals in the time as well as in the space domains. In this study, the signal discontinuity of mode shape displacement is extracted using continuous wavelet transform. The technique requires mode shapes in both damaged and undamaged states. Wavelet transform of mode shape differences gives the wavelet coefficient values. The location of sudden peak of wavelet coefficient will be the location of damage. Damage location on the plate can be found out using wavelet transform method, at any point in the structure. Moreover, the method gives an accurate result on damage detection with single mode shape itself, comparing with frequency analysis.
