The Electronic and Chemical Structure of Poly(3-Hexyl-Thiophene) Studied by Photoelectron Spectroscopy
Abstract The processability of conjugated polymers has lead the the possibility of performing better studies of their chemical and electronic structure. In this contribution, the thermochromism in a processable polyalkylthiophene, namely poly(3-hexylthiophene), is reviewed, with an emphasis on the proposal that, at high temperatures, soft conformational defects, which lead to electronic localization effects, are responsible for determining the reversible, temperature-dependent color changes which have been observed in this conjugated system in the insulating (non-doped) state. In addition, some new spectroscopic evidence for electronic localization, based upon studies of model molecules in the gas phase, is presented.
