Urban Regeneration with Rooftop Farming Pilot Projects
The paper discusses the role of agriculture in urban regeneration, with a focus to rooftop community gardens and vertical green technologies. The advantages of green rooftop for the built environment and for mankind are numerous: reduction of noise pollution, reduction of energy consumption and heat island effect, control of rainwater runoff, but above all the possibility to have fruit and vegetables at zero km, recycle some of the waste into compost, and create opportunities for socializing. Rooftop food gardens can have an important role as urban renovation and as a regeneration device, combining social with environmental benefits, especially green smart technologies for food production, and contributes to social functions, including new economic and social factors as subjects able to produce values for the community collective interest. The paper will show few case studies, a result of researches technologically advanced for green roofs techniques and urban regeneration as examples of social inclusion. Many new productive rooftops have been developed in the recent years and new agriculture techniques have been experimented; this shows that on roofs in the urban context, in particular in many case studies realized for the social inclusion, rooftop farming can become the answer and the social support to enhance the resilience.
