Regional Diversity and Sustainability of Megacities in Global Historical Perspective
It can be said that megacities are products of history on a global scale. Starting from the Islamic cities as an illustrative case in the viewpoint of morphological analysis, a framework of six eras and six regions are proposed related to the urban transformation and their ecosystems. Based on the framework, the urban population and the urban area are reconsidered through global history from the birth of cities up to the present. We clarified when megacities appeared and how they spread across the world, based on the concept of the regional perspective. Furthermore, the features of megacities by six regions are examined, focusing on their population density, urban expansion, and urban planning. Through the series of analysis, five conditions for the sustainability of megacities could be found according to global urban history although megacities are a relatively new phenomenon in the twentieth century. On the other hand, we should be careful that regional features related to their own environment become less significant due to the modern and global influence, considering their dwelling styles in megacities. In addition, the number of future megacities in each region is estimated. New megacities will appear around the globe.
