The Environmental Impacts of Natural Resources Depletion
Depletion of natural resources occurs when resources are consumed at a faster rate than they can be renewed. The availability of natural resources can be seen in water use, agriculture, fossil fuel consumption, fisheries, and mining, and has an impact on the environment. The depletion of natural resources is affected by many factors, namely overpopulation, poor agricultural practices, illegal logging, excessive consumption of natural resources, and pollution. This study aims to analyze the effects of natural resource depletion on the environment through the environmental quality index, the availability of the number of forest areas, and the extinction of animal species in Indonesia. The research methodology uses the ordinary least square regression analysis technique (OLS) with time-series data from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that there is a significant and positive influence between the depletion of natural resources and the availability of forest areas. It suggests that conditions and activities in forest areas will have an impact on natural resource depletion in Indonesia. While the Environmental Index and animal species extinction has a positive and insignificant relationship to the depletion of natural resources. In the future, to overcome the depletion of natural resources, it is necessary to control land use and promote the exploration and use of renewable resources to lead a sustainable life.
