Determining Effective Stresses in Partly Saturated Embankments

Abstract Different layers of heterogeneous materials inside embankments lead the mentioned materials into different state of stresses. On the hypothetical example of the embankments made of clay and drainage layer, the calculation of the effective stresses in the body of the embankment with the drainage layer will be shown. Within the framework of the presented research, a model was created in the Geo Studio environment that performs a water filtration budget in an unsaturated environment, based on the Finite Element Method for non-linear 2D Laplace equation. The results of the model show the distribution of effective stresses and displacements for embankments loaded only by their own weight.
