Performance Analysis of Distribution System with PV Penetration Using Flower Pollination Algorithm
The conventional power generation plants alone cannot meet the increased load demand due to increased per capita electricity consumption in recent years. Additionally, due to environmental concerns, all power-producing utilities are pursuing the accumulation of renewable energy-based power generation plants. Simultaneously, modern consumers produce electricity and transform themselves into prosumers. The primary objective is to utilize renewable energy sources as a distributed generation system. In this work, solar photovoltaic is employed as a renewable energy source in the distribution network. The allocation of solar photovoltaics was determined using the flower pollination algorithm to maximize the energy cost objective function. It is a metaheuristic search algorithm inspired by the pollination techniques used by birds, insects, and other animals to complete flowers. The penetration of solar photovoltaics in the distribution system is analyzed using a practical Portuguese 94 bus balanced and 19 unbalanced bus distribution system. Moreover, the power losses, annual energy savings, and annual cost savings are determined and provided individually for each season. The analysis reveals that the optimal allocation of solar photovoltaics through flower pollination algorithm minimizes power losses and strengthens the voltage profile of the distribution network. The study intention benefits distribution network operators in better planning distribution networks that incorporate renewable energy sources centered on solar photovoltaics.
