    Abstract One important result of Laughlin’s theory was the observation that the elementary charged excitations in a stable state $$ v = \frac{1}{\operatorname{m} } $$ are quasiparticles and quasiholes with fractional electron charge of $$ \pm \frac{e}{m} $$ .
