Stability of rocks on the slopes of mountain-river canyons
Conclusions 1. The polygon-of-forces method is a universal means for calculating the stability of rock slopes. 2. If the stability of the rock masses cannot be guaranteed for the service life of the structure, then prior to construction it is necessary to estimate by technical and economic comparison two variants: removal of the unstable rock and its artificial stabilization. 3. Prestressed rods and cables with a reinforced-concrete lock, often in combination with cementation of the mass, are the most effective form of stabilization. 4. The magnitude of the additional retaining force which must be applied to the slope to ensure its stability with a prescribed safety factor is the initial magnitude when calculating stabilization works. 5. When constructing hydraulic structures in regions with high seismic activity, the calculations of slope stability and additional retaining force should be performed with consideration of the maximum seismic force for a given region under its most unfavorable orientation.
