Urban Wilderness - Concept Exploration and Perspectives in the Context of Sarajevo
The city of Sarajevo is going through a process of extended social transition, which implies the privatization of social (public) land, with a pronounced process of deindustrialization. This paper aims to question the possibilities of avoiding the repeated mistakes of accumulation of functionally, visually, and contextually inadequate and impersonal residential and commercial buildings, in order to use the last remnants of industry and traffic hubs for the return of nature to the city, relying on the principles of urban wilderness. The observed locations of the GRAS depots and the national broadcasting service building RTV dom are at the geometric center of this linear city, and the starting point within the area between the 6th and 12th transversal road – an area of opportunity to spatially articulate the idea of continuation of the blue-green recreational axis along the Miljacka river. Drawing on the good traditions and practices of urban planning in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this paper advocates the conversion of the aforementioned public land into a new, but contextually adapted urban wilderness.
