Design and Construction of the Plaster Ceilings of Gaudí’s La Pedrera, Unpublished Notes from a 1909 Sketchbook
Based on the content of an unpublished sketchbook of 59 pencil drawings of a set of plaster ceilings corresponding to those of the La Pedrera building (1906–1910) [1], made during their construction in 1909 by the son of the plasterer in charge of their on-site construction, we can document the methodology used by Gaudí to design and construct the ornamental elements of these ceilings that were built in plaster. On the one hand, results obtained from the metric information of the actual ceilings, acquired by means of dense stereo matching, have made it possible to see how geometric proportions were used and to identify the different mechanical curves employed to define the layouts and construction plans for the plaster ceilings. To complement the above, an exhaustive analysis of the sketchbook and its historical-anthropological context leads to the conclusion that the architect did not improvise in the ornamentation of these plaster ceilings. Gaudí designed and drew to scale the different types and layouts of the ceilings beforehand, and determined the building techniques required to construct them at full scale in situ, detailing these procedures and criteria for his collaborators, Domènec Sugrañes, Josep Canaleta and Josep Maria Jujol, so they could divide up the extensive work that had to be carried out in the more than 200 rooms of the building.
