Model investigation of directed-blast formation of trial dam on the Burlykiya River
Conclusions Investigations of a trial blast in a modeling apparatus have shown that the increase in dam volume and base width and in the velocity of rock throw, compared with a preliminary prediction, occurred as the result of the joint effect of several new factors which arose in the course of preparations for, and execution of, the blast: increase in blast energy by 15%, reduction in explosive-charge density, and change in the delay interval between detonation of the charges. The increase in dam heigh at the central site is governed mainly by the sharp bend in the gorge at this location. Furthermore, from a comparison of the results of model 3 tests and the designed dam dimensions, it follows that in executing the blast on the Burlykiya River, the total weight of explosive charges could have been reduced to 500 tons. In this case, taking into account the favorable effect of the sharp bend in the gorge, a dam of the designed dimensions would have been formed.
