Fluid-Structure Interaction in Analysis of Bridge Piers. Part I : Theoretical Preliminaries
Abstract The theoretical preliminaries needed for the analysis of fluid-structure interaction are presented. After the derivation of the wave equation which governs the response of an acoustic fluid, the effect of the surrounding fluid on the response of a spring-mass system is studied. A submerged rigid cylinder, which may be considered as the model of a bridge pier, is subjected to a sinusoidal excitation. The hydrodynamic force acting on the cylinder is calculated analytically.
