Abstract Various local probes indicate that the nano-scale atomic structure of superconducting oxides is not uniform, but is characterized by local dynamic distortions. Furthermore the dynamics of these local distortions appear to change appreciably at the onset of superconductivity, indicating that these distortions are resulting from strong electron-lattice interaction. In this article we describe some details of the interpretation of the pulsed neutron scattering results which led to the identification of local structural distortions, and discuss implications of these observations to the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.
