Investigating the Unique Thermal properties of Thassos marble
This work investigates the physical properties of Thassos marble which represents a unique heat dissipated stone used in Najaf Holy shrines flooring. XRD was used to detect the phases found in the marble, optical microscopy imaging test was used to reveal the microstructure and grain size. Light reflection test was also investigated using a digital gloss meter. Thassos marble was compared with ordinary white marble (OWM) in terms of thermal properties and performance. Heating cycles of Thassos and OWM marbles samples were applied to reveal their thermal performance. Heating cycles were also carried out on ordinary glass in order to compare and to reveal the effect of light reflectivity. Results showed that Thassos marble has a unique ability to dissipate heat as the microstructure is mainly consists of large plate-like grains with an average size of 2 mm. XRD test revealed that Thassos marble is mainly consist of dolomite with a thermal conductivity value of 6 W/m.K double than OWM which is 95% calcite.
