Tailoring the Properties of Cement-Treated Clayey Soils
Abstract Imagine being able to transform unwanted soils about to dump into our costly landfills into specific engineering properties useful in land reclamation and construction. This paper discusses the influence of mix proportions, curing time and sand impurities on the strength development of cement-treated clayey soils. A predictive strength model is developed to facilitate estimates of strength of these treated soils. This permits optimisation of cement dosage to achieve a desirable strength property, especially in cases of less homogeneous clayey soils. With the proposed strength model, engineers can now forecast the 28-day strength of cement-treated clayey soils to assess their compliance with the contractual requirement. Defective mixes can be identified early and timely remediation performed before the treated soil hardens excessively.
