A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter describes some hysteretic dampers. They are the devices that dissipate energy through the cyclic yielding of metallic elements. The metal used is steel for the hysteretic dampers discussed in this chapter. Hysteretic dampers were among the first developed in the history of anti-seismic devices and many of their smart geometries have been developed in the world. This chapter describes, in particular, the two types that have given the best performance: E-shape and C-shape. These dampers, after a very large initial diffusion, have seen their applications reduced mainly for these reasons: high cost, need for control and/or replacement after an earthquake, and failure to verify the re-centering criteria according to some standards. However, it should not be forgotten that this type of damper can guarantee maximum energy dissipation and maximum reliability in terms of precision and consistency of response. This chapter also suggests a quick procedure for selecting the right size of hysteretic dampers.
