Experimental investigation on the effect of loading frequency on the fatigue damage characteristic of asphalt mixture
Abstract Field practice and laboratory tests have both shown that loading frequency has an important impact on the fatigue damage characteristics of asphalt mixtures. However, not many studies have been conducted on this issue. In light of these facts, this paper seeks to utilize indoor experiments and site trial to study the effect of loading frequency on the fatigue damage characteristics of asphalt mixture. The results show that, load level remaining constant, lower loading frequency leads to faster strain progress and damage evolution which results in increased modulus deterioration while at the same time decreasing the fatigue life of the mixture. Conversely, a higher loading frequency will slow down strain progression, damage evolution, and modulus deterioration while increasing the mixture's fatigue life. In addition, this paper proposes a formula for calculating the quantitative influence of loading frequency on the fatigue life of the mixture, and a frequency index of 1.098 is suggested.
