Guided Waves in Hollow Cylinders: Theoretical and Numerical Study
Guided wave techniques have proved to be an efficient approach for long-range inspection of engineering structures. Such techniques, however, still face challenges in the in-service inspection of pipelines due to the complex propagation of guided waves in hollow cylinders. This paper aims to provide better understanding of wave phenomena in pipes modelled as hollow cylinders using analytical and numerical methods. We first propose explicit expressions for free guided waves in pipes using appropriate potential functions. The characteristic equations are then derived in order to obtain the dispersion curves. The amplitudes of torsional wave motions generated by time-harmonic sources are computed and integrated into the dispersion curves. These computations are important to guided wave mode selection for inspection process and can be considered as a reference tool for nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring of structures.
