Early Stages of Ni(110) Oxidation — An STM Study
Abstract The interaction of oxygen with Ni(110) was investigated by STM. The formation of the (2×1) and (3×1) structures, which were identified by their one-dimensional corrugation, did not involve any kind of long range mass transport. This rules out structure models exhibiting a mass deficit like e.g. “missing row” reconstructions. The two-dimensional corrugation of the (9×4) suboxide agrees with an existent model, assuming a single layer of NiO(100) on the Ni substrate, its formation involves long range mass transport and partial erosion of Ni terraces.
