Conclusions 1. Asphalt, vertical, centrally situated membranes in dams of local materials have particular advantages in the construction of dams in the northern and high mountain regions, greatly reducing the amount of imported materials and eliminating seasonal work. 2. Favorable experience in the construction of asphalt membranes abroad recommends them for the Soviet Union. It is possible to simplify their erection by using poured asphaltic concrete and to improve their reliability by constructing layers of asphalt compound along the axis of the membrane and employing electric heating for repair purposes.
