A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Abstract Construction of outer-electron energies in oxides is reviewed within the context of an ionic model. The 5s and 6s conduction bands of Group-B metals are distinguished from the s bands of other main-group oxides. Localized 4f n configuration energies are located relative to the edges of the broad bands in rare-earth oxides, and some physical properties imparted by 4f electrons in mixed-valent or intermediate-valent oxides are indicated. Conditions for localized versus itinerant d electrons and for ionic versus covalent bonding in the transition-metal oxides are stressed in addition to the location of the Fermi energy relative to the edges of the broad s and p bands.
