Photogrammetry-Based Building Scan Using Ultra-Lightweight Drone for Urban Applications
Several studies have reported how drones are applied in photogrammetry. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) facilitate acquiring images on a large scale such as landscape mapping or three-dimensional model generation of construction sites, buildings, and bridges, … However, most of them use specialized ones which leads to difficulties such as obtaining flight licenses, pilot-limited skills, and take-off and landing spaces. In a previous study, the authors demonstrated the feasibility of using an ultra-lightweight, small-sized drone, also known as a mini drone (a type of non-specialized photogrammetry drone), to create a digital twin model. At this time, we use DJI Mini 2, which is a cheaper photography drone with lower image quality than last time. However, thanks to the perfecting of the flight plan, the resulting building digitization guarantees to fulfill the visualization purposes with a high level of detail. This article will give an overview of the UAV—photogrammetry process step by step while discussing the use of mini drones in the data acquisition process and present a specific case study, showing at what level of detail can the results reach mainly through visual inspection.
