Impact of Stochastic and Deterministic Behavior on Natural Ventilation: Thermal Comfort and Indoor Air Quality Performances in a Preschool Case Study
The Covid-19 pandemic and climate change highlighted the role of building design to ensure good indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy efficiency, particularly in environments occupied by children. Indoor comfort is crucial for children, whose sensitiveness is higher due to their delicate and still-developing respiratory systems. For this reason, the aim of this paper is to investigate the daily discomfort hours (DDH) and IAQ in a preschool school in Bari (Southern Italy). Through a monitoring campaign of external and internal temperature and relative humidity in classrooms, natural ventilation practices implemented by the educators were analyzed. Hence, the deterministic ventilation strategy deducted was implemented into the energy model and served as basis for simulations of DDH and CO2 levels, conducted in a summer period. After this deterministic analysis, the same analyses were performed using a stochastic model to underline the differences between the two models. The results revealed how natural ventilation serves as a powerful mean to ensure good IAQ and low-discomfort strategies in school buildings.
