Investigation of A-TIG welded duplex stainless-steel plates
TIG welding process is generally restricted to welding thin plates in their original form as it is primarily a no-filler process. However, attempts have been made to make the process suitable for relatively thick plates by using activated fluxes. The present work is aimed at investigating the effects of activated flux on TIG welding of duplex stainless steel. The various fluxes used are titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), manganese dioxide (MnO2), and molybdenum trioxide (MoO3). The aspects investigated are weld bead profile, bead appearance, arc constriction, tensile strength, and SEM analysis. A series of experiments were conducted in which TIG welding was performed with and without fluxes to understand the effect of fluxes and to have a comparison on the effect of different fluxes. The detailed examination and testing of the weldments with fluxes revealed a significant improvement in all the aspects studied when compared with the results obtained with no flux welds, especially the degree of arc constriction and depth of penetration which has improved to an extent of 300%. The work is expected to draw the attention of industry and investigators toward the potential and benefits of using activated fluxes over conventional TIG welding.
