Rehabilitation of 1920s Housing Settlements: Examples from Cologne and Frankfurt
The concept of urban planning in Germany has become important for both urban officials and citizens since the end of the 19th century. Rapidly growing cities with the industrial revolution and the increasing urban population, has led to the transformation of medieval cities. Between 1925–1929 urban planners in many German cities acted as the propagandists of the new order. In these new housing settlements with basic facilities such as small shops and yet attached to the main cities, one could enjoy the new lifestyle: apartments with central heating and hot water systems, fresh air and light which gives the impression of spaciousness to the small housing units. Housing settlements constructed between 1920–1930 in Cologne and new housing settlements located in Frankfurt also known as results of New Frankfurt project, are good examples to reflect the main planning attitude of the era mentioned above. The renovation of the settlements raises the question of how modern living requirements and energy-efficiency can be agreed with the preservation of the original architectural and urban design principles. This paper aims to discuss the intervention techniques used in rehabilitation of 1920s modernist buildings through housing settlements located in Cologne and Frankfurt.
