Structural Modelling of Crashes in Signalized Intersections
Based on studies, the significant number of crashes occur at intersections. Therefore, it is necessary to research widely about the signalized and un-signalized intersections safety. In this study, data were collected of 45 signalized intersections in three regions of Tehran and the relationship between geometric and traffic parameters and crash frequency have been estimated and modelled by structural equation model. Also, traffic parameters, include variables as average volume of entering traffic per year, average entering speed of vehicles and geometric parameters, including the total number of lanes at intersection approaches, the total number of medians at intersection approaches, the number of phases of traffic lights, the total number of right turn lanes at intersection, the total number of visual obstructions (plants in median) and the number of lines in a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in the legs of the intersection. In structural equation modelling, estimated parameters for traffic and geometry that are two latent independent factors, show that the main factor affecting the total number of crashes, are traffic factors (5.79). The results show that the total number of lanes at intersection approaches (3.35) was the most effective factor among the geometric factors and average annual entering traffic volume of intersection approaches (29.56) was the strongest variable among the traffic factors.
