A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Billions of daily online transactions worldwide are fueling the digital economy (DE). It is a key player in the fourth industrial revolution and places high value on knowledge (such as big data) as a good and service. The growth of the DE was recently expedited by the COVID-19 pandemic. By facilitating goods and services to be accessed from home, allowing for reduced exposure (for some) from the airborne disease, the DE proved itself invaluable. This transition from traditional in-person economies which have been the norm for centuries creates new implications for all sectors, not least urban form. This chapter will further discuss the DE, the adaptation that retailers of different sizes must make, and the harms and benefits it poses to urban identity and place-making.
