Regeneration of Smart Spaces for Smart Living in Kozhikode Metropolitan Region (KMR)
Regeneration of Smart Spaces for Smart Living in Kozhikode Metropolitan Region (KMR) is attempted. The Smart spaces are ICT-IOT enabled public spaces that empower governing and participative-functioning for the intended activities using smartphone applications. Smart living has been defined in Chapter “10.1007/978-981-15-4615-0_1“. Scarce Urban Land of KMR will be converted into selected locations based on well-defined criteria to smart living spaces through the regeneration of urban spaces for all living species and all age cohorts. Based on Census data 2011 and definition of urban agglomeration, KMR is defined. It also includes Kozhikode Corporation and the municipalities of Vatakara, Koyilandi, Ramanattukara, Feroke, Payyoli, Koduvally, Mukkam. The regeneration of smart spaces to smart living is not indicated by the existing policy of the Government of Kerala and Master Plans prepared for two urban settlements of Kozhikode. In this study, the existing master plans of Kozhikode and Vadakara is critically appraised to see whether they considered the regeneration of smart open spaces. Then the functional role of smart growth areas where the public realm can be established for community activities is located using a GIS-RS based model. After identifying the suitable smart growth locations, public realm siting and management is suggested for different user groups as well as space standards and urban design. By solving the ecological issues of the KMR, to a considerable extent, we can solve the problems concerned with the scarcity of public space per population. Suitable land management tools and techniques are applied in the context of blue-green spaces of KMR which include wetlands, joining two wetlands, CRZ, and agroforestry sectors to establish smart and lively spaces in KMR. Finally, the public realm is designed for the specific use of different groups (pre-school, working age and old age) in a location accessible to all.
