Challenging Contemporary Housing: Ralph Erskine’s Byker Wall
The contribution investigates, through the analysis of Byker Wall's contemporary residential project, the socio-spatial and socio-technological implications connected to the process of urban transformation. In particular, the strategies of community and bioclimatic architecture proposed by Ralph Erskine are explored. These strategies appear to be essential today, also due to the dramatic contemporary cultural and climatic crisis. Interesting solutions can be inspired by the lessons of designers of the last century, even though they are considered radical innovators of their time. Erskine occupies a unique, yet isolated role in the history of contemporary architecture due to his enigmatic architectural identity. The project realised in Newcastle defines its formal, linguistic, functional, technological, and spatial paradigms, oriented towards urban liveability, environmental comfort and social cohesion.
