Recollecting Manggarai Vernacular Architecture as Told by the Locals of Labuan Bajo
The former small trading town of Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, is facing rapid changes in preparing to become a a world-class tourism destination. These transformations inevitably influence the built environment. Unfortunately, there is limited literature and documentation on the current and past Manggarai vernacular architecture. The existing records are mainly specific to the conical house of the ‘highland’ Manggarai people, threatening the diversity of their identity. This research analysed a Manggarai dwelling in Labuan Bajo through the lens of transformation theory using direct observation and interview to learn the values and transformations of Manggarai society from oral history. Further, the research compared the layout analysis to the ‘highland’ Manggarai architecture. Through this research, we explored the diversity and transformation of a Manggarai house in the coastal setting of Labuan Bajo. The findings are expected to pave the path toward cultural sustainability and historical appreciation in Indonesian society.
