Parametric study of L-shaped irregular building under near-field ground motion
There exists a close relationship between the architectural plan of a building and its performance under earthquake ground motion. A building with a regular structure takes less damage than one with an irregular structure. But due to some site-specific requirements, the structure can have some irregularities. To design irregular buildings with good earthquake resistance, dynamic analysis is necessary and can be performed by either the time history method or the response spectrum method with the help of finite element (FE)-based software. The present study aims to understand the behaviour of the irregular building under near-field ground motion by performing time history analysis and checking for torsional irregularity. In this study, a regular building model and six L-shaped building models derived from the regular model have been created using the finite element-based software SAP2000, and time history analysis has been performed. The responses, such as natural time period, storey displacement, inter-storey drift, and base shear, were determined, and it was found that these responses increase with the level of irregularity.
