Oxygenation by Plunging Jet Aerators: A Review
Treatment of liquid waste is a matter of concern nowadays due to a rapid increase in population and industrial expansion. Various aeration techniques are adopted in order to stabilize the liquid waste aerobically by providing the requisite amount of oxygen to the bacteria present in organic matter of the wastewater. Aeration by plunging jets is a suitable and attractive way of adding and mixing atmospheric oxygen into the liquid. Optimization of jet parameters relative to plunging jet aeration equipment is necessary to improve the oxygen transfer performance. The paper comprises a comprehensive study of oxygenation through plunging liquid jets carried out by different investigators. Oxygen transfer and air entrainment mechanisms are discussed, empirical relationships developed for oxygen transfer with various jet parameters are presented, and impact of jet parameters on the performance of aerators is evaluated.
