Use of Parametric Software for Selecting Building Materials Based on Embodied Energy
Major amount of Green House Gases discharges are contributed from the building and automobile industries. The two vital energy parameters of a structure are Operational (OE) and Embodied Energy (EE). Several studies have dealt with operational energy since it is a main contributor to the entire energy of the building lifespan. Lately, work on embodied energy and embracing sustainable construction has increased as it is important for the future. This paper looks into process of selecting materials for components like walls, roofs floors and windows based on total embodied energy. Parametric software like grasshopper was used in defining several choices for each component existing in the codal provisions. Plugins like archsim and climate studio was used for defining the zonal loads, conditioning and construction. Lastly, energy plus and galapagos were used for finding the best selection of materials based on the total embodied energy for the construction. The study selected components for the construction, which provided the least EE out of several options given to the software.
