Sense of Security in Urban Recreational Park—An Exploratory Study of Cubbon Park, Bengaluru
Background—The Sense of Security is a crucial factor that affects the usage and activity of an urban recreational park. This study explores to identify the sense of security and park usage of a park within the context of Bengaluru, India. Design/Methodology/Approach—Systematic observations were carried out in the park by two independent observers for identifying the number of visitors, Hawkers (moving, on wheels), cars, two-wheelers, and other vehicles in the park at different times of the day (morning, afternoon, evening, and night) for weekdays and weekends. For the ease of the data collection, the entire park was divided into three zones. Activity mapping for all the different observation timings was prepared for analyzing the activities and usage within the park. A safety audit and questionnaire survey was conducted in the park with the help of respondents (n = 138). Findings—Activity mapping gave a clear picture of how the movement pattern and functionality of space directly relate to the sense of security and reduction in fear. The results from Safety Audit, and Questionnaire survey were validating the findings from activity mapping. Conclusions—Multiple method approaches provide more clarity in validating the findings for analyzing the perception of safety in urban parks.
