Influence of Clay on Soil Erodibility and Landslides: Some Examples from Manipur, Northeast India
Soil erodibility and geotechnical studies were carried out to examine the causes of some recent landslides along National Highways: NH-39 and NH-37, and other parts of Manipur during rainy season. Studies on soil erodibility reveal that all the slide areas lie in the ranges of moderate to critical level of erodibility. Plastic index values show moderate to high plasticity, implying that they can remain in plastic state for a longer duration, which makes the soils vulnerable to plastic deformation. Plasticity index increases with clay content and organic content. Study reveals that erodibility decrease with increasing clay content and plasticity index. Based on the analyses of slope stability and factor of safety, all the slide areas are prone to slide except the Maphou area which lies in low category. Natural moisture contents (w) of slide areas are found to be greater than their plastic limits, which could be the main reason of frequent occurrence of landslides during the period. Considering all these factors, especially the clay content in soil, the present paper proposes a scale of soil erodibility and examines their correlation between soil erodibility and its influence on the potentiality of slope failure.
