Mechanical Behaviour and Durability of Compressed Earth Blocks Treated with Bio-binder
Earthen building materials are commonly chemically stabilized to improve their durability against the impact of water. However, the chemical stabilizers used, such as cement, can have a negative impact on the material recyclability potential. This study examines the possibility of using a bio-binder namely (Carob Gum) (CG) as a stabilizer in earthen building materials through unconfined compressive strength tests, drip and dip tests. Biopolymers offer some advantages over cement, such as reduced embodied energy and carbon footprint, and are widely available renewable resources worldwide. Previous investigations have suggested that similar biopolymers can provide appropriate mechanical properties. Our study demonstrates that carob gum is capable of providing satisfactory durability performance and improving the mechanical behaviour of the material.
