Reliability of a Timber Truss Considering Its Joints
Timber is one of the commonly used materials for building construction and is mostly used as trusses in roofs of buildings. The joints of the truss system are critical points that need sound design and analysis to be carried out. Reliability analysis takes care of many uncertainties that arise from the design and construction of such structural systems. This paper looks into the reliability of these joints having nails as fasteners, considering variables such as the geometrical variables (cross-section of the timber truss, diameter of nails), load variables (Nodal loads of Dead, Live, and Wind loads), and resistance variables (compressive and tensile strength at right angles to the grain, shear stress and strength, splitting capacity of timber, load-carrying capacity of nails and embedment strength). The analysis was done using Monte Carlo simulations and the results showed that the probability of failure was low, indicating a high reliability of the truss. Therefore the reliability index meets the criteria of a 50-year reference period for consequence class 2.
