High Resolution Profile Imaging of Reconstructed Gold Surfaces
Abstract High resolution profile imaging study of the reconstructed surfaces of gold (001), (110) and (111) with use of UHV 1MV high resolution electron microscope is reported. On (001) surface atomic arrangements along the 5 times period of the 5×28 structure are clearly resolved and compared with the simulated images. On the (011) surface, missing row type atomic arrangements are observed. Relaxation of atom positions is noted in the image, which qualitatively agrees with that reported by LEED analysis. On the (111) surface, an atomic arrangement caused by a contraction of surface layers is observed. The results clearly show the usefulness of the profile imaging in an UHV environment for the studies of the reconstructed surface structures.
