Numerical simulation of reinforcement corrosion and protection in submerged hollow concrete structures
Generally the corrosion conditions of steel in the submerged zone of reinforced concrete structures exposed to seawater are not severe, due to the low oxygen content of saturated concrete, the low steel potential and the high value of the chloride threshold level. However, in hollow structures macrocells could develop, which can increase the steel potential and corrosion rate. For this reason, in these structures cathodic prevention or cathodic protection systems could be useful. For several reasons, it is difficult to study the effects of macrocells and the effectiveness of cathodic protection systems in real structures. This paper describes results of numerical models aimed at simulating corrosion and protection of steel reinforcement in hollow structures.
