The Historic French Wharf in Lavrio: Documentation, Conservation, Reuse, Revitalization
The Historic Wharf is situated at the Port of Lavrio in Attica Greece and was constructed in 1887–1888 It is a technologically advanced Industrial construction, a significant landmark, a listed monument since 1995. The people of Lavrio are very concerned about the degradation of the monument, because they always considered it as a valuable symbol of their recent history and demand it’s conservation. The documentation, conservation and reuse project of the wharf was a very difficult and challenging project that needed intensive interdisciplinary collaboration.
The geometric documentation was executed using contemporary methods of data acquisition and processing and was part of an interdisciplinary approach concerning historical, architectural, structural and mechanical documentation. The architectural reuse proposal aims to conserve and revitalize the Wharf, reactivating it as a “living” cultural monument open to society.
The stone walls and the metal structure will be conserved and other parts will be reconstructed. The circulation of people on the metal part will be restricted to modern corridors, following the rails where the wagons used to circulate. The architectural proposal also emphasises sustainability and viability, proposing changes to the surrounding urban fabric.
