Multimethod Approach to Evaluate Affordable Housing Performance
Sustainable, affordable housing is a challenge that requires close attention to residents’ needs and expectations. The Building Performance Evaluation (BPE) provides a systemic approach to investigate the effectiveness of the facilities after occupancy. However, studies have shown that BPE faces many performance gaps that require a more integrated approach. This paper aims to propose a new integrated research approach and examines its practical application. The integrated system includes a Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) survey, a semi-structured interview, observation of physical traces, and a walk through. A case study was used to examine the effectiveness of this integrated approach. The study reveals that some building elements and design layouts must be improved. Study shows high level of thermal discomfort reflects in a high level of dissatisfaction. The study recommends reconsidering finishing materials choices to be safer and healthier. Finally, the study suggests the integrated approach as a reliable and informative BPE tool.
