Complexity and Contradiction in the Graphic Sources About Territory and Landscape. The Buen Retiro in Madrid

Researches dealing with the study and evolution of territories and landscapes, typically manage written sources. The increasingly frequent use of all kind of images -manuscript, printed, and photographs- as well as maps and plans, evidences the existing contradictions between written and drawn information, that become even more obvious when compared with fieldwork results. Moreover, a careful reading and a proper interpretation of drawings and mapping requires knowledge of the cartographic representation and the graphic styles used at different times, in order to avoid misunderstanding and wrong conclusions. As a result of the experience acquired in Cultural Heritage researches, we raise some questions that evidence some common mistakes about places, landmarks and landscapes of architectural and cultural interest, and the possible causes of error. As a case study, we propose the Royal Sites built around Madrid, and particularly the Buen Retiro.
