A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Abstract Louvain-la-Neuve is a unique new town not only because it is a planned university town of Belgium combining ‘town and gown’ but also because its intra-city movement of the people has been designed for the pedestrian. Even though two decades have passed since the first building was erected in 1972, such movement still remains pedestrian. We do not know of any new town in the world which combines ‘town and gown’ functions with pedestrian-oriented city traffic. Louvain-la-Neuve is situated about 30 km south of Brussels (Figure 11.1) and has a rural surrounding.
